Harper Hope Eve….

OK…well, I've delayed my journey by one day, and the entire adventure will be done next week at this time. I've had a good week. Good news and good friends. In doing some additional research on my trip, I discovered that the town of Monroeville, Alabama actually has a "To Kill A Mockingbird" Museum…. WHOA!!  Casper has headed to bed so he is fresh and ready for the trip. He had a day at the spa on Tuesday and is relaxed and eager to see the world!!

So…here's the plan:
Friday: journey to McLean, Virginia. There I will spend the night and catch up with cousins Janice and Bert, their children, Juliet and David. Apparently, it is David's high school Homecoming Weekend, and Janice has volunteered to run the concessions. Naturally, I volunteered to assist her. I don't know what the evening will entail, but if I know Janice, it will be quite an adventure!!
Saturday: I will depart McLean, and head to Charlotte, NC. There, I have arranged to connect with high school friends Jamie Dawson and Karen Norton at the Cracker Barrel by the Charlotte Airport. I have to say I have emailed Karen, but have not heard from her…hmmmmmmm….wondering if she and I will connect.
Sunday & Monday: Charlotte to Monroeville, Alabama. Yum!! The crux of my journey may be a happenstance of luck in meeting N. Harper Lee.
Tuesday, I will arrive in Macon, GA at the home of my cousin, Pat and his wife, Shirley. I will spend the night with them and catch up. I have something for Pat that I hope will be a special gift.
Wednesday I depart Macon and head to Greenwood, SC at the home of my cousin, Troy and his wife Julie, and their children Kyle and Lauren.
Thursday, I head to Durham, NC, see a friend from Grammar school, Kathryn DeMarco and hopefully visit her art which is showing at the art gallery in Durham, and hopefully ending my day with a visit and stopover with Sonia Smith, a friend and team mate from high school. Friday morning….back home very early!!
Just like Dorothy said, "There's no place like home." But for the next week, if you are not on the list above, if you want to know what is going on with me, you will have to follow the blog…
      Gotta go pack!! Au revior!!

  2. Ah....a 3 hour nap roadside allowed Casper to sit in the driver's seat while I slept on his bed in the backseat. I'm now at denny's just outside Durham, NC and am looking forward to pancake puppies!! Oddlyenough, the fact that this Denny's serves alcohol AND has a pool table doesn't surprise me!

Last night, ironically, I stopped at the Walt Whitman rest stop on the NJ Tnpk., seemsWalt and Wally are with me on my journey to Harper!!

My cousin, Ellen, left me a message for a safe journey: thanks Ellen! It's Harper Lee...not Lee Harper. Do what I did: remember her name is alphabetical and you'll never forget again!,

I should get into Charlotte around midnight...since we couldn't do dinner, Jamie and I are doing breakfast. Between church-going crowds...gotta love the bible-banging south!!

Welcome...

In celebration of the 2010 "Big Read," I have decided to pursue the chance to meet the author of the "Big Read," Nelle Harper Lee. The Pulitzer Prize winning novel, "To Kill A Mockingbird" was Lee's first and only attempt at publishing a novel, yet it remains one of the world's most infamous piece of literary content. Translated into more than 40 languages, Lee's story of justice, family, ideology and humanity has transcended generations in the 50 years since it was first published.

I invite you to join my journey, combining a bit of Walt Whitman, John Steinbeck, my dog, Casper and myself as I set my sites on Monroeville, Alabama with copy in hand of "TKAM" in hopes I am privileged to meet Ms. Lee.

Along the way, this blog will be updated daily, filled with pictures and tales of family and friends I meet up with along the way. Casper, I'm hoping, will be a constant ice-breaker toward people I might not have ever uttered a word.

I have a listing of unique places to pop in: The Lunch Box Museum, walk the staircase from "The Exorcist" sit atop Einstein's lap, see the world's largest peanut, visit the Laurel and Hardy Museum, South of the Border, The Land of Oz, The Big Acorn, the giant ice cream bowl with spoon, the Shoeless Joe Jackson statue, the cancer survivors plaza and other places my ipod app directs me to!

Stay tuned...
